As a dabbler in the world of marketing here are my picks for three recent marketing geniuses.

Woot.com. Woot managed to combine several basic human needs (the need to win, the need to belong, the need to have nice things, the need to get a good deal, and need to not miss an opportunity), into a killer way to make millions(?) of dollars selling everything from HDTVs to bags of nothing. So don’t miss your chance to get a to get a Toshiba Gigabeat 60GB Portable Media Player for $199.99+ $5 shipping, just don’t forget that you probably just got tricked into buying it.

Dan Brown of The Da Vinci Code fame. The book was ok…the end was kind of lame…but it was hard to put down once I started it. But that’s not why he was a genius, there are lots of books like that. Right before the first chapter there is a little paragraph that says that the book is based on true historical facts (or something like that). Controversy! Scandal! Attack on all we hold true! Millions of dollars in Dan Browns bank account. He was probably crossing his fingers the whole time he wrote it…

Nintendo. I got to play tennis and golf on a Wii the other day…and I have to say it was really fun. It’s a bit like DDR or Guitar Hero, but different and better. The really smart part is the way they took their purple cow and marketed it. They could have made the controller a gun, put a bunch of really fancy stuff in it, slapped a $600 price tag on it, and tried to compete with Microsoft and Sony. But they basically went after a whole new segment of gamers. Aside from the controllers the whole thing is decidedly low tech (and actually they are not that high tech…just innovative). The graphics are simple, no HD, no Blueray, no a whole bunch of stuff that you have to be a geek gamer to understand. Instead it is supper accessible. You pick up the controller to play tennis and you automatically know how to use it. You don’t have to figure out what the a,b,x,y,x,lt,lb,rb, and rt buttons do. You just swing the thing like you are playing tennis. You can play for 10 minutes and have a great time or 2 hours and have a great time. They made it so that a whole group of people who couldn’t care less about halo3 suddenly have some games that they can play and have fun at. Combine this with making almost the entire line of Nintendo games from the very beginning available online for the Wii and you get to tap a whole new market of casual gamers. And there is lots of room for expansion. How about a fishing game where you buy the game and a new fishing pole controller that has a reel on the side? And next year they can make a WiiHD and re-release all the games in HD so all those people with fancy HDTVs can play tennis in HD. Then in a couple years they can make the WiiExtreme that is targeted at gamers with all the high end stuff. They will basically get to sell the thing 3 times to a lot of the same people. Those people over at Nintendo are smart.

Now, if they would just put a Wii up on Woot I’ll be all set.

Today, Ben & I walked down the hill to the office this morning to go to work. That’s right, I am employed again! J I have been waiting to hear back about a job in the office here at camp, and things were made official yesterday.

I am the Program Administrative Assistant….which means I get to help our program staff (summer camp, retreats, outdoor ed, etc.) with the administrative stuff. I’m really excited about this opportunity to serve here at camp, where my heart has been for a long time. I have been missing my DaySpring friends and keeping up with all that is going on in their lives, though.

Please pray that as we continue to adjust to this new year and all the changes it is bringing that we would be seeking the Lord and His direction on things like:

- our finances (different amount of income now, and school bills are still the same)

- new schedules (Beth balancing work and school again)

- wisdom and increasing confidence as Beth meets with clients

- creativity for Ben as he works on his projects to promote NLR

The ice started melting today. It was kind of crazy, it was like it was raining and snowing and chunks of ice where falling out of the trees all at the same time. To me it felt like huge structures falling down. I don’t think anybody got hit by the ice…unlike that one tree branch that almost fell on my head a few days ago…Beth just laughed at me (so did I…). It’s really cool to see the resilience of the trees. There were a couple trees in our front yard that were bent with their tops to the ground, and now they are almost standing up straight again.
I took some more pictures… (are you sick of my pictures yet?)

We survived the storm. We did not have any major damage at camp, the worst thing was a big limb that fell on one of camps trucks. It smashed in the roof, and broke the windows. We all spent the last two days clearing fallen limbs and branches from yards, the ropes island and around camp. We have electricity, but a lot of people around us don’t. It is cold, so be praying for them! Pray for the linemen that are out working to restore power. A bunch of them are staying here at camp and they leave at 7 in the morning and don’t get back until 6 at night…its a long day!

Here are some pictures. You really cant capture what it looks like to have 1 – 2 inches of ice on everything…it is beautiful and destructive at the same time…

Hours without electricity: 47
Hours until it’s likely the electricity will come back on: 72

We are without power at camp….. and it is C-O-L-D outside! :) but we are keeping warm with our wood burning stove and down comforter. It’s kind of fun actually…. we played a 10+ person game of Apples to Apples last night. It’s kind of fun since we aren’t actually stranded without heat or water all by our lonesomes. We have a great community out here at camp….especially when things like this happen. We all cram into a few houses with wood stoves and play games by candlelight and eat sandwiches for dinner together. And as long as the roads stay ok, there is a town about 15 minutes away that has cool things like electricity so I can make posts on our blog. :)

(I just heard that our power might be back on….yay! :) )

Well folks, I am officially unemployed.  (hopefully not for much longer though….details to come later…)

When I started this counseling program (3 years ago!) I knew that there would come a time where I would probably have to cut back on working hours and give school more hours of my day.  And that time has come…  It was really hard saying goodbye to DaySpring.  I haven’t really been able to find the words to describe my time there.  I learned SO much.  I met such amazing people.  I learned so much about myself.  It was a GREAT experience and I will miss it.

This first week off has been pretty full….Friday was actually the first day I was at the house all day.  It has been so great to have some freedom in my schedule to go visit friends and watch their kids while they get stuff done….to run errands and take care of things for school (phone calls, setting up Internship sites) in the middle of the day and not just on lunch breaks or after work.

I have started meeting with clients and would greatly appreciate your prayers!  Some specific prayer requests:

- that I would be a vessel for the Lord as I counsel others
- that we would make wise decisions with significantly less income now
- that our faith would be strengthened as we trust that He will provide as we serve in the places He has called us (NLR & Counseling)

We went to visit Beth’s family a couple weeks ago in OKC. It was a great time of hanging out, playing games, eating… you know, the usual family get together stuff (well, most families I suppose don’t ride horses). Here are some pictures:

It was great to get to see Beth’s family, and for me, to get to know them better!

For those of you who are family and want the pictures the high resolution versions are in these zip files to download (right click each file and chose save as)  Zip1, Zip2, Zip3
